As potential future Hornets learned and played inside a new child development center in East Sacramento, representatives of Sacramento State, UC Davis, and SMUD celebrated the facility’s grand opening on Tuesday, Dec. 13.
“It’s joyous to be here,” Sac State President Robert S. Nelsen said before he and other luminaries cut a ceremonial ribbon outside the entrance to the Bright Path to Learning center on Folsom Boulevard near 60th Street.
Sac State, UC Davis, and SMUD are partners in the effort to provide more affordable, quality child care to their employees and others in the region. The center, which spans 17,000 square feet of indoor space, can accommodate about 200 children ages 6 weeks to 6 years. It welcomed its first youngsters in November.
Colleen Clancy, UC Davis associate vice chancellor for Academic Personnel and a Physiology professor, said the center will benefit working families, student parents, and others who have difficulty finding acceptable day care for their children.
Affordable and quality child care is as critical to the region as “any road, electric grid, or building,” Clancy said at the ceremony.
The new center features high-quality educational programs and an outdoor “edible and ecological play space” and garden that will stimulate curiosity and learning.
