This must be some twisted Bambi type of stuff…
Deer are herbivores. They eat only plants, and very specific plants at that. They have a specific diet consisting of low fiber, high protein and easily digestible plant species. If that don’t have specific food sources in an area they simply cannot live there.
However…
Herbivores do eat meat from time to time. It’s very uncommon, and by definition, damn near impossible as they don’t have teeth designed to cut through flesh, nor the stomach to break it down as efficiently as we do. But, it seems to happen from time to time, like this elk munching on a rabbit. There’s no real reason or explanation for it, although there are a couple theories as to why it might happen.
Primarily… they are lacking in some area of nutrition and the opportunity presents itself to snag an easy meal. Low calcium is believed to be a culprit, as they are often spotted munching on bones as well.
This young buck is seen in someone’s Monterey, Tennessee, backyard trying to do something. It’s unclear at first what that is, but then we see a number of birds seeming to attack the young buck, striking homeowner, Linda’s, curiosity.
It becomes clear to Linda that the deer is chomping on a baby bird, as the other birds continue to dive bomb hoping for the deer to release their friend. It doesn’t and Linda is losing her mind watching this scene unfold:
“Michael… there’s a bird on the ground, it’s hurt. He’s picking at it, that’s why they’re beating him up…
OH MY GOODNESS HE ATE A BIRD? MICHAEL, HE ATE A BIRD… HE ATE A BIRD. DID YOU SEE THAT?
They’re really gonna beat him up now…”
You can hear Michael laughing in the background, as the deer absolutely munches on the song bird.
