James Edward Kadlec was born on March 16, 1939 on a farm north of Olivia to Edward and Bertha (Herdina) Kadlec. He attended country school until 8th grade and graduated from Olivia High School. Jim served his country in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964. He participated in many pistol competitions during his service. On September 25, 1965, Jim was united in marriage to Sharon Kopel at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bird Island. They made their home on a farm north of Olivia and were blessed with five children. They liked taking trips together with their family, including Duluth, the Black Hills, and Hawaii for their ‘second honeymoon.’ Jim and Sharon were faithful members of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia. He was a dedicated usher serving from 9th grade until his health issues in 2019. Jim was a life-long farmer, passing on his love of agriculture to his sons. When he wasn’t farming, he enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing. While fishing, he was always early to the boat so he wasn’t left behind and “nothing was too small.” Bird watching was a favorite hobby of his. He loved all things Bohemian, especially kolaches. His beloved dog, Daisy, meant a lot to him and they spent much time venturing around the farm together. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 4097 in Olivia. Jim will be remembered for his kind heart and being a caring provider for his family.
James is survived by his wife Sharon of 57 years; his children: Nancy (and Jim) Manderscheid of Bird Island, Carol (and Dan) Rothmeier of Olivia, David (and Beth) Kadlec of Olivia, Debra (and Adrian) Anderson of Kandiyohi, and Daniel Kadlec of Olivia; his 11 grandchildren: Kyle Manderscheid, Tyler (and Emily), Bryan (and Alli) & Jayson (and Andrea) Rothmeier, Alison, Joel, Neil & Grant Kadlec, Kristine, Kealan & Kinley Anderson; his four great-grandchildren: Saveah Rothmeier, Fulton & Fletcher Rothmeier and Baby Rothmeier coming soon; his sister, Janet Langlais of Hastings; and many other relatives and friends. James was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Bertha; and his brother-in-law, Richard Langlais.
