When the stock market goes through downturns, it has the potential to induce changes in investor psychology and behavior that are rarely beneficial. It’s always tempting to think that the stock market might not recover.

The Copper Fox Gallery in Leiper’s Fork is hosting a book signing with photographer Nathan Collie, whose book, “Moments with Birds, a Bird Photographer’s Journey Through the Seasons,” was recently released. The signing is Sunday from 12-3 p.m. and the gallery is located at 4136 Old Hillsboro Road.
Collie’s interest in birds spawned at an early age during visits to his grandmother’s in Memphis. She had bird feeders all around her yard and stacks of bird books in the house.
“My grandmother knew so much about [birds],” Collie said. “She triggered my curiosity.”
Collie developed his deep love for the outdoors and the lessons nature teaches while spending time with his mom, Anne Goetze. While she photographed and painted landscapes he hunted, fished or wandered.
“When I was with Mom I’d be fishing and looking up into the skies,” he said.  “I learned how unique Tennessee birds and birds who migrate through here are.”
When he learned about and found species in decline, “I wanted to document them.”
Collie picked up photography from his mother, also a photographer, but he went in a different direction — primarily wildlife.
“He found his own niche,” Goetze said.
The camera lens allowed him to look closer, grab opportunities and capture rare moments, like the eagle snatching a fish from a great blue heron; the sudden appearance of a barred owl that silenced the forest with his presence; and the rare Rosetta spoonbill that showed up in a Spring Hill pond swimming alongside an egret.
While taking the photos, Collie discovered “birds are an animal that can change positions very quickly. I can get several different poses within just a few minutes. I’ve yet to find that in any other animal I’ve photographed.”
With each photo in the book, Collie tells a story and provides the location. Some of his favorite local spots include Radnor Lake State Park, Warner Parks, Timberland Park and a few local lakes and ponds. He made visits to Murfree Spring Wetlands in Rutherford County and Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in East Tennessee, which provided spectacular views and photo opportunities of migrating species, specifically the flocks of Sandhill Cranes wintering in the refuge.
Throughout the book he added tips for amateur bird watchers and suggestions for preserving bird populations or creating a bird-friendly environment.
For those who can’t make it to the book signing, “Moments with Birds” may be ordered online at nathancollie.com and Amazon.com and can be found at most Ingram distribution bookstores including Landmark Booksellers, Parnassus and Barnes & Noble .
The Copper Fox Gallery is known for its eclectic collection of traditional and modern original, handmade pieces from sculptures, ceramics, metal, wood and glass pieces to furniture, jewelry and leatherwork.
