Haleakala National Park will offer free entrance on Saturday and activities such as night bird watching and Junior Ranger Days as part of National Park Week.
The special programs will kick off Saturday, when all entrance fees will be waived for both kama’aina and visitors. Sunrise reservations are still required from 3 to 7 a.m. Saturday and can be made by visiting recreation.gov.
Other National Park Week activities will include:
• ‘Ua’u Night from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Haleakala Visitor Center at the 9,740-foot elevation. Hosted by Haleakala National Park and the Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project, the event will provide participants with night vision goggles and thermal imaging cameras to spot ‘ua’u, or Hawaiian petrel. Staff and volunteers will be available to answer questions about the birds and the night skies.
• Junior Ranger Days from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Kipahulu Visitor Center and on April 23 at the Park Headquarters Visitor Center. Keiki of all ages are welcome to participate; fourth-grade students can obtain a voucher for a free pass at www.everykidoutdoors.gov/pass.htm and pick it up in the park. Passes are good through August.
• Earth Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 22 at Hosmer Grove. Participants can check out binoculars for bird viewing, volunteer in a drop-in trash cleanup and learn about their role in protecting the planet.
